Title: Placing Your Bets on Innovation

The John L. Anderson Distinguished Lecture Series in Chemical Engineering brings celebrated and influential chemical engineering researchers to campus. This lecture series is named to honor the accomplishments of former Carnegie Mellon University Professor of Chemical Engineering and Dean of the College of Engineering, John L. Anderson. Dr. Anderson, president of the National Academy of Engineering, has made an impressive impact on the field of engineering, both through his research and his many roles in academic leadership around the country.

Darrell Velegol is Distinguished Professor of Chemical Engineering at Penn State University. He earned his BS from West Virginia University in 1992 and his Ph.D. from Carnegie Mellon University in 1997, working with Professors John L. Anderson and Stephen Garoff. In 1998, he won the Victor K. LaMer Award of the American Chemical Society for the best Ph.D. in the field of colloid and surface science. He joined Penn State in 1999 and has received numerous research and teaching awards over the years. He studied colloidal systems for most of his career at Penn State and made a sharp turn in 2017 to study innovation processes and budgeting. As an educator, he leads his students to imagine great dreams, pursue great disciplines, and win great victories.
