With support of the Fulbright Specialist Program, Ignacio Grossmann is visiting the University of Cantabria in Santander, Spain, from August 31, to October 4, 2023.

The Fulbright Specialist Program matches U.S. academics and established professionals with host institutions abroad for two- to six-week project-based exchanges. The U.S. Department of State established the program in 2001. Selection as a Fulbright Specialist is competitive, based on knowledge, skills, and ability to contribute to projects and build capacity at institutions overseas.

"I am very honored to be a Fulbright Specialist as it has allowed me to collaborate with researchers from other parts of the world, like in this case with researchers at the University of Cantabria in Spain, who are engaged in very interesting projects related to sustainability," says Grossmann, the Rudolph R. and Florence Dean University Professor of chemical engineering. "I also enjoy the opportunity to teach courses to students from other countries. Overall, the Fulbright program is a very enriching experience."

Grossmann is teaching the four-week graduate level course "Sustainable Process Systems Modeling and Optimization," for Ph.D. students in the chemical and biomolecular engineering department and School of Engineering at the University of Cantabria.

The course will be followed by the workshop "Process Optimization for Sustainable Energy Systems" on September 28 and 29. Participants include faculty and students from several universities in Spain in the areas of process systems engineering and sustainable energy systems.

Grossmann will also collaborate with faculty at the University of Cantabria on several research problems, including techno-economic assessment of integration of saline gradient units based on the reverse electrodialysis technology in water remediation processes undertaken in wastewater treatment plants. Additionally, he will give several seminars on educational and research topics.

This is Grossmann's second visit to the University of Cantabria through the Fulbright program. He was a Fulbright Senior Lecturer there in 2003. Grossmann also previously served as a Fulbright Senior Lecturer at the Universidad del Litoral in Santa Fe, Argentina, in 2018.
